Food has always been my connection to home. At the heart of South Indian food has always been spices. Having created a home away from home in America, I struggled to find authentic versions of my favorite Indian meals. I decided authenticity was something I could create myself- eventually I became an expert in cooking traditional South Indian meals.
I saw firsthand how sharing this food with other Indians, even with my kids, transported them to my birthplace and allowed them a taste of the nostalgia and home I always feel during these meals. By cooking authentically, I was able to show friends and family my home.
As cooking quality and real food becomes more of a struggle for working people on the go, I wondered why people had to sacrifice this taste for time. Through SK, I hope to address that issue and through one spice packet at a time, show people a little taste of my home.
